Dont Run The Risk

"Don't Run The Risk"

P-Way 365

P-Way looks after the track upgrade and renewal works within Tube Lines. Over an 18 month period from Jan 2007 P-Way changed the way it worked to bring its Lost Time Injury rate down to zero.

This short film charts how this was achieved

Tube Lines are responsible for both maintenance and upgrade work on the Jubilee line, Northern line and Piccadilly line. We also provide a number of services across the network including the Emergency Response Unit (ERU), Distribution Services and Trans Plant. We also deliver a growing catalogue of safety and skills courses as well as competency management consultancy.

Maintaining the system

Over the first 7½ years of our agreement with London Underground, around half of Tube Lines' £4.5 billion plus investment will be used to maintain the system. This is a massive task, as Tube Lines inherited some of the oldest infrastructure on the network. A history of under investment and inconsistent maintenance regimes has further impacted on system reliability. There is a great deal of work required to ensure that the Tube is fully operational every morning and we have to have a highly responsive maintenance capability to deal with unplanned work.

Each and every night of the year, thousands of Tube Lines employees and contractors are out on the railway, ensuring that it is fit and ready for service each morning. This army of night workers operates mainly between the hours of midnight until four in the morning. Maintaining the system is a hugely challenging job and requires an attention to detail to make sure that the right people and right equipment are in the right places each night. Tube Lines has introduced new technology to help understand the bigger picture of where maintenance is most required to enable the company to focus resources in the right place.

Hit or Miss?

'Hit or Miss' is a Network Rail educational staff video, an absolutely brilliant piece of short film that demonstrates the dangers not only to staff but to all that have or will think about trespassing on the railway and how it affects all the people involved.

Hazards of Coal Stockpiling

Mine Safety and Health Administration

Hazards of Coal Stockpiling Operation, 1994
This video shows what happens when miners or equipment operators are working on a surge pile and the material unexpectedly collapses, breaks loose, or starts to flow underneath them. The disastrous result of being engulfed in loose material -- suffocation -- is demonstrated by a working model of a surge pile. The model shows how stockpiles with drawholes and feeders work, what takes place within the piles, the properties of flowing materials, and how hazardous conditions can develop at surge piles. Included are action scenes of heavy mobile equipment being used around stockpiles. The video emphasizes recognizing stockpile hazards and preventing stockpile accidents.

The Hidden Danger and Safety Improvements for Surge Piles

Safety Improvements for Surge Piles, 2000

Pushing coal on a surge pile has been called the most dangerous job at a prep plant. Nineteen miners have lost their lives in surge pile accidents since l980 and there have been many other close calls. This video will show two ways to protect equipment operators from this danger: extra-strength cab windows or remote controlled dozers.
